MAMI WATA – How a Myth is Brought Back to Life

Sometimes it is fascinating to see how the threads of fate intertwine. Sometimes, however, we can simply speak of true divine intervention.

During our African Mythology Series in the second half of 2024, we dove deep into the untamed tales of the African continent. We dedicated a distinct beer series to four powerful water deities at the time—one of whom was the alluring and unpredictable water goddess Mami Wata.

Although the brew was an absolute highlight back then, Mami Wata didn’t quite secure a permanent spot in our core lineup. She went down as one of our proud legacy legends in the history of the Gods Brewery. What we couldn’t have guessed at that point: her story was far from over.

An Unexpected Guest and Divine Intervention

In early 2026, our paths crossed with Stephanie Müller, the curator of the interdisciplinary special exhibition «Sehnsucht Mythos» by the Museen Thurgau. In her search for artifacts related to “water deities,” she descended into our halls. The surprise and joy were massive on both sides: the very same Mami Wata we had built a liquid monument for a year and a half prior was to play a supporting role in her new exhibition at Werk2 in Arbon.

For the curator, it was the missing puzzle piece of contemporary myth preservation—for us, the honor of seeing our craft exhibited amidst high-caliber works of art.

The Vernissage at Werk2 Arbon

On Friday, June 12, 2026, the time had finally come. At the grand opening at Werk2 in Arbon, we witnessed firsthand how our Mami Wata complements the special exhibition about the shaping power of stories. But an empty bottle in a display case just wasn’t enough for us.

Exclusively for this historic occasion, we brought the myth to life once more! The long-lost recipe of the oceanic Double IPA was brewed again in a strictly limited batch. At the opening night, the deity could therefore not only be marveled at but also tasted in all its hoppy glory.

The Journey Continues

For those who want to experience the shimmering presence of the water goddess themselves, there is still plenty of time: The special exhibition «Sehnsucht Mythos» at Werk2 runs until November 22, 2026.

Be sure to also mark August 12, 2026, in your calendar—a very special event dedicated to Mami Wata awaits you on this day.
